Middle Keys - Islamorada, Marathon & Matecumbe
Made up of five islands or Keys, Islamorada is known as the Village of Islands and is also renowned as being the fishing capital of the world as it is so close to the Gulf Stream. The islands of Upper and Lower Matecumbe Keys are located within Islamorada and contain a number of Indian mounds and middens, as well as being home to the main base of the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base.
In the Middle Keys, the city of Marathon – “the heart of the Florida Keys” – spreads over a number of islands and is separated from the Lower Keys to the south by the Seven Mile Bridge. It is well-known for its scuba diving and sport fishing, being an excellent place to catch dolphin, marlin and big sharks! For the less adventurous, Crane Point is a well preserved tropical hardwood grove with a historical home of an early 20th Century settler family. Grassy Key, located next to Marathon Key, features the Dolphin Research Center – a great day out for adults and children.

snorkelling and fishing. Big Pine Key is home to the National Key Deer Refuge and nearby Bahia Honda State Park and Recreation Area is renowned for being one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Key West is known locally as the Conch Republic. Being the furthest island from the US mainland, Key West has developed an “anything goes” attitude and lifestyle, with ‘clothing optional’ bars and inns typifying the extremely relaxed atmosphere and diverse population. A gay holiday paradise, Key West hosts the world-famous FantasyFest in October.
